Does Nick and Disney Channel make kids disrespectful?

Standard

My stepdaughter has practically grown up watching Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel.  I have seen enough Disney Channel or Nick sitcoms to know that the typical scenario is like this:

  • There exists a drama queen or homecoming king teen…
  • The kid(s) go to some Beverly Hills type high school
  • They have free reign of their respective homes
  • Hardly, if any, parental guidance and control is seen
  • The 10-15 year olds usually work somewhere cool, hip and happening, with no supervisors
  • The kids are loud
  • The kids are obnoxious
  • When parents are shown, the parents are dumb, slow, nerdy, or wrong in some way
  • The kids are always right
  • The parents are submissive and subservient
  • The parents are almost always gone somewhere and parties ensue
  • The kids have credit cards
  • The kids are preachy and form exclusive cliques
  • There is always some outcast kid being made fun of
  • Money is no object
  • They have the latest gadgets, instruments, televisions and amenities
  • Smaller children are almost exclusively mentored by these snotty teens
  • The parents either don’t work, have glamorous jobs or are stinking rich

So the kids get addicted to this melo-drama.  They watch these shows…Hannah Montana, That’s so Raven, Zack and Cody…Cory in the House…Drake and Josh…all of these shows feature a popular teen, unrestrained by parental guidance, living a free-for-all lifestyle of wilding out.  And somehow they are always right and every situation turns out in their favor.

This is the crap that kids watch, watch and watch.  They watch so much of this stuff that they too begin to act this way.  Defiant of authority, spoiled beyond belief…expecting the best, right here and right now!  I firmly believe that all of this attitude is learned from these accessible and encouraged shows.   Then there is the peer-pressure feedback loop.  Not being current on what happened in one of these shows makes you “uncool”…a cast-out…the same mal-adjusted buffoon that is made fun of on the shows on every episode.  So kids watch more and more…to not become that social outcast kid…yet they themselves become disrespectful, defiant and unruly.

  1. Sounds like the same type of shows that made people vote overwhelmingly for President Obama! At least parents can restrict cable, restrict sling boxes to their smartphones, restrict vcast TV on their cell phones, restrict internet access.

Kids are so selfish now… they go through technology so fast (breaking it/dumping it so it no longer works) expecting dual core laptops, and WiFi enabled PSP’s and iPod touches to give way to NEW NETBOOKS, all without thinking that perhaps that new netbook in the house IS NOT REALLY MEANT TO BE THEIRS AT ALL!

All I can do is remember that show from the 80’s…MoonLighting… where the office revolted and went on strike. They were all incompetent… shouting and protesting “Less work, More pay!” over and over. That is the type of generation that we are raising.

    • What are the odds that I have seen the First Lady on current Disney shows… More than once… So am I banning not only the obnoxious plots, but the shocking promotion of them? The only First Lady to participate in celebrity in such a blatent manner. What happened to charities or causes? I doubt Disney needs donations … How disappointing it was to see her on there. I just LOL’d at your comment because it was spot on.

My 9 year old loves those shows. She is now rude, snotty, talks back, lazy, and truly thinks she’s entitled to her diarhhea of the mouth. She was banned from the shows starting today. I’ve had it.

What a pathetic message to bully and discriminate yet in between the show, there are “raps” against it? Sigh..

  2. Sounds like my fave i-Carly. Two hot-tights are always ruling unsupervised as you describe. Money is no object.
